SayPro 116931-2-4 SayPro Lesson Search engines
Search engines are programmes that search documents for specified keywords and returns a list of the documents where the keywords were found. A search engine is really a general class of programmes; however, the term is often used to specifically describe systems
Typically, Web search engines work by sending out a spider to fetch as many documents as possible. Another programme, called an indexer, then reads these documents and creates an index based on the words contained in each document. Each search engine uses a proprietary algorithm to create its indices such that, ideally, only meaningful results are returned for each query.
How is document relevancy determined?
Once a search engine has found documents in its database that relate to your input, it will list them according to their relevance. The questions is now, how is this relevancy determined? The algorithm, a list of procedures and factors, is different from company to company. Sometimes they are described on the search engines pages, but mostly they are kept behind the curtain.

ADVANTAGES AND DISADVANTAGES OF SEARCH ENGINES
There are three very compelling advantages of most search engines.
- The indexes of search engines are usually vast, representing significant portions of the Internet, offering a wide variety and quantity of information resources.
- The growing sophistication of search engine software enables us to precisely describe the information that we seek.
- The large number and variety of search engines enriches the Internet, making it at least appear to be organized.
On the other hand, disadvantages
- Regardless of the growing sophistication, many well thought-out search phrases produce list after list of irrelevant web pages. The typical search still requires sifting through dirt to find the gems.
- Using search engines does involve a learning curve. Many beginning Internet users, because of these disadvantages, become discouraged and frustrated.
