Opening of Olihile Whynie Manong Soccer Exhibition 2022

The MEC for Sport, Arts and Culture Ms. Desery Fienies will unveil the Olihile Whynie Manong Sport Exhibition at the Duggan-Cronin Gallery on Wednesday 05 October 2022 at 18h00.

The exhibition themed “Honouring the forgotten Sporting Heroes” details of how the majority of black sportsmen and women were denied access to sporting opportunities by erstwhile Apartheid government.  This exhibition tells the story of one of the forgotten heroes of Northern Cape sport first as a player and later as an administrator. The main purpose of the exhibition is to remember, preserve, celebrate and provide education about South Africa’s lesser-known sport history.

Whynie Manong was a Kimberlite with phenomenal sport abilities who was denied in the prime of his sporting career to participate in a non-racial setup due to the then apartheid laws. He was also an incisive and committed sport administrator who served as a SAFA Representative for more than 30 years. In his time as a player and administrator Mr Manong collected and preserved a large number of sport memorabilia , that included national and international soccer , cricket , athletics and rugby lapels , badges , photographs , flags and personally signed jerseys.

These items and as well other sport memorabilia of Olihile Manong will be exhibited at the Duggan-Cronin Gallery by the Department of Sport , Arts and Culture and the McGregor Museum.
