SayPro Dispatch single-user personal computers and peripherals

4.1 The dispatch ensures that units are packed according to manufacturer and assembly specifications. Step 1 – MeasureBefore you do anything measure your computer. In order to know how to pack a desktop computer you must measure first. Once you have this measured you should find a box that is at least 3 inches larger (internal measurements) on every side. So if your tower is 24x18x8 your box should be a minimum of 30x24x14. Measure twice, cut once! You'll need bubble wrap to pack your computerStep 2 – WrapRemove all the cords. Now using, 12×24 inch large (1/2 inch) bubble wrap, wrap the entire tower. The best way to do this is by laying out two pieces of bubble wrap on a flat surface with a small overlap. This way you can cover the entire monitor in a consistent fashion. Tape the bubble wrap securely making sure not to let the tape come into contact with the computer. How to pack a desktop computer NOTE: An alternative to the bubble wrap is a thin sheet of foam. The make rolls of thin foam that can accomplish the same purpose with less padding. In this circumstance this is acceptable as long as your box has plenty of space for padding.Step 3 – The Box1Construct your box (make sure it is a new box) and add at least three inches of static-free packing peanuts to the bottom of the box. Shake the box well and let the peanuts settle before you measure and confirm the correct amount of padding. UPS provides some great insights on how preparing for shipping. Why a minimum of three inches? Because the computer is heavy and will depress the peanuts so we need to add a little extra. If the tower is extra heavy you should add extra peanuts. In fact, you might have to use traditional foam peanuts instead of earth-friendly potato based peanuts. You should never use corn peanuts because if there is moisture present they turn to glue.Tip: If these packing tips aren’t doing the job and you get overwhelmed at any point in this process you can always use our packing calculator to get an instant quote and be connected to a packing and shipping professional nearby.Step 4 – Void Fill2You can set the computer in the center of the box and fill the sides with packing peanuts. Gently shake the box to settle the peanuts and then add more until they are mounded on top. Continue to shake gently until it is clear they have settled and close and seal the lid. The lids should put pressure down on the top of the peanuts. If this doesn’t happen, add more. Seal all the seams and seal them well. You don’t want any moisture to get to the computer.Step 5 – Shake and SealTape all the seams. You can expect the carrier, FedEx, UPS or the Postal Service to tip your package end over end and ship it down miles of conveyor belts before it reaches its destination. You never know which end will be delivered up. So don’t count on “Keep Upright” stickers to do the job and just make sure both top and bottom are adequately padded. Also, remember to shake the box gently to allow the void fill to settle before taping.NOTE: Before closing the box lids, zip tie all the cords and place them in a plastic bag. Place this bag on top of the peanuts so it is the first thing the recipient sees when they open the box. If you are sending manuals or other documentation they should be treated the same way. Many times people don’t search the peanuts and just take out the computer and throw everything else in the trash. Remember, when you close the box lids they should put slight pressure on the packing peanuts below them. If they don’t, open it up and add more.Step 6 – Reinforce the CornersBecause this is a heavier item in a larger box the corners are especially susceptible to damage. If this box gets dropped, which it will, the corners will be dented in and no matter how well you have packed the computer it will be at risk. To fix this problem measure the height of your box and cut your cardboard corners to fit. They can be taped on if you have really good tape or strapped on with a poly-strap. Clearly label your box and choose a reliable carrier to handle the shipping. You can use our shipping calculator if you want to see all your shipping options. That is how to pack a desktop computer. There is no one right way to pack a desktop computer, so make sure you adhere to our standard packing principles no matter how you choose to pack your items.
