Organizational context
UNDP’s Regional Service Centre for Africa is based in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. With additional offices in Dakar, Senegal and Nairobi, Kenya, it serves 45 Country Offices in sub-Saharan Africa, develops high quality knowledge and policy, and is the organization’s main interface with regional and continental bodies such as the African Union and the Regional Economic Communities. The Center also implements a continent-wide Regional Programme supporting Africa’s transformation agenda by: 1) enhancing inclusive and sustainable growth, 2) widening political participation and giving everyone a voice, and 3) developing responsive institutions which deliver desired services and promote inclusive processes of state-society dialogue. UNDP-Regional Service Center comprises of approximately 120 national and international staff. The JPO staff will be based in Gender Team. The Gender Team comprises of 9 national and international staff including Regional Advisor and Team Leader.
The Gender Team of the Bureau for Policy and Programme Support (BPPS) is the institutional anchor of UNDP’s work on gender equality and women’s empowerment. it provides policy advice and technical support to all of UNDP’s Bureaus and leadership on how to mainstream gender across all areas of their work. The Gender Team works to implement gender equality as a core objective of UNDP through a two-pronged approach (i) mainstreaming gender in all core practices; and, (ii) dedicated interventions that empower women and promote gender equality. In addition, the Gender Team is responsible for all corporate planning, for supporting corporate programming, reporting on gender and for supporting Senior Management in ensuring accountability for gender mainstreaming. Finally, the Gender Team supports the Administrator and senior management in addressing gender equality and women’s empowerment in their convening and representational functions.
Position Purpose
The JPO staff will be part of the Gender Team in the Regional Service Center, UNDP, reporting directly to the Regional Gender Advisor and Team Leader. The Gender and Communications Specialist will work in close collaboration with all staff in the Gender Team and with the regional Media and Communications Team to support the positioning of the RCSA gender work and contribute to the overall implementation of the regional advocacy strategy.
Key Duties and Accountabilities
1) Contribute to the overall implementation of the regional programme on Gender Equality and Women’s Empowerment in Africa and promote positive results in this regard (40%)
Example of Duties:
Contribute to the advocacy and promote visibility of the Advancing for Gender Equality and Women’s Empowerment in Africa, Spotlight Initiative and Regional Programme
Work across the gender team’s thematic areas to identify and document best practices, lessons learned for further knowledge building and dissemination.
Assess communications needs and priorities for the RSCA Gender Team
Develop, and produce communication and advocacy materials on GEWE regional project across different Gender Team’s thematic areas and coordinate its dissemination.
Design and layout materials (e.g., reports, posters, infographics, images, dynamic presentations, etc.) for internal and external audiences, and for presentation, print and online use.
2) Effective Communication and Advocacy to facilitate knowledge building, awareness-raising activities on advancing the gender equality and the empowerment of women in the region (40%)
Example of Duties:
Generate knowledge, data and information from the ongoing programmes and projects and contribute towards the development of Policy Briefs, factsheets, Press release , media and communication products and tools applying gender-sensitive communication principles.
Facilitate knowledge building and knowledge sharing incorporating the use of new technologies
Ensure appropriate communications before, during and after regional and national events like knowledge sharing meetings, seminars, trainings, conferences, and other special events related to the Project.
Assist in collecting ‘most significant change’ stories to support annual reporting and editing/popularizing project specific and related news updates.
Advance the project’s digital presence through social media and UNDP existing Twitter account, LinkedIn and Facebook pages.
3) Support advocacy, knowledge building and communication efforts in support of the Regional Service Center in the implementation of RBA Communications Strategy (20%)
Example of Duties:
Contribute towards the development of the regional and global communication products, tools and visibility materials relevant to GEWE and its thematic areas
Implement communications programmes to publicize priority issues and/or major events, to include drafting communication strategies (including social media), coordinating efforts, monitoring and reporting on progress, taking appropriate follow-up action, and analyzing the outcome
Provide inputs to the regular monthly reports, stories, articles, etc.
Initiate, draft, edit communications materials, including infographics and multimedia products using UNDP communication branding standards
Coordinate with the regional office communications team to ensure inclusion of gender mainstreaming and women’s empowerment data, emerging issues and progress are well incorporated into all communications, advocacy initiatives
Perform other duties as and when required and designated by the supervisor.

- Digital marketing & social media management – Proficiency with digital communications platforms and tool

- Technical writing – Strong niche knowledge to create accurate documentation about the products and services such as Press Release, web content, technical documentation etc.
Requirements
Education
- Master’s Degree or equivalent Advanced Degree in Gender Studies, Sociology, anthropology and/or Communications, Mass/Media Communications, Public Relations, Journalism or relevant field.
Experience, Knowledge, and Skills
- A minimum of two years of relevant professional experience, with ideally at least one year’s experience in the region or in development issues in similar development contexts
- Experience with media and social media software, applications and communication tools with computer proficiency, especially related to professional office software packages (Microsoft Office).
- Experience in graphic design for digital and print platforms
- Demonstrated experience in communicating Gender Equality work tailored to different audiences is a distinct advantage
- Experience in UN related communications
Language requirements
- Excellent working knowledge of both English and French (as communication/advocacy products will be in both languages).
