Position Title: WASH Advisor

Global Support and Development (GSD) is a humanitarian organization whose mission is to respond rapidly to disasters in collaboration with at-risk communities and support them to prepare for future disasters. Mission: GSD rapidly responds to disasters in collaboration with at-risk communities and supports them to prepare for future disasters.

PURPOSE OF POSITION:

The WASH Advisor serves as the pre-eminent subject matter expert on the subject of Water, Sanitation and Hygiene, both from an ethical/impact perspective and from a technical one, as GSD designs and builds its WASH department and strategy. They are expected to guide the WASH Program Manager in their design and implementation of the WASH department and activities, and to advise GSD leadership regarding best practices for the ethical and effective inclusion of community-facing WASH activities into GSD’s repertoire of disaster response options.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Advises the WASH Program Manager and Director of Logistics on the subject of Water, Sanitation and Hygiene, specifically by making recommendations on priority setting and ethical ramifications of WASH programming (response, outreach, and donations), and by determining performance standards and measurements;
  • Monitors and certifies WASH Program equipment and SOPs for compliance with international WASH sector practices;
  • Assists with WASH donation proposals, ensuring alignment with current WASH sector practices and the recipient’s WASH needs;
  • Supports the professional development of GSD WASH staff, to ensure our sector capacity remains up-to-date with latest developments;
  • Represents GSD in the WASH sector by building and strengthening strategic partnerships with government counterparts, WASH institutions, NGOs, research institutes and the private sector;

Required Experience:

  • A minimum of eight (8) years of professional experience in developing and implementing WASH programming in developing countries is required.
  • At least one of the above, eight years must have had a focus on WASH in disaster response and recovery.

Required Education:

  • Master’s degree or equivalent in one of the following fields is required:
  • Sanitary engineering
  • Water engineering
  • Environmental Engineering
  • Additional relevant postgraduate courses and study in the following is a plus:
  • Public Health
  • International Development
  • Poverty Alleviation
  • History and context of the Caribbean and South Pacific
  • Behavior change communication
  • Climate change

Knowledge/Skills:

  • Fluency in English, both written and verbal is required.
  • Prior experience and proven capability in training and adult education
  • Prior experience and proven capability in community or organizational capacity development

Working conditions and physical requirements:

The WASH Specialist requires the physical ability to complete the arduous pack test for wildland firefighters. This role provides support for the forward deployed team in the field and may operate from staging sites in moderately austere environments.

  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee may regularly be exposed to outdoor weather conditions and occasionally exposed to wet or humid conditions;
  • The employee must be able to travel and work irregular or extended hours;
  • The employee must be able to stand, walk, and sit regularly, have manual dexterity, reach or stretch, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl, speak, and hear within conversational range.
  • The employee must be able to climb or balance occasionally;
  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus;
  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee may encounter the following scenarios while wearing appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE):
  • Be exposed rarely to fumes or airborne particles;
  • Be exposed rarely to excessive decibels of noise;
  • Be exposed rarely to toxic or caustic chemicals;
  • Work occasionally near moving mechanical parts;
  • Be exposed occasionally to the risk of electrical shock or vibration.
