JOB PURPOSE
Save the Children South Africa (SCSA) is implementing a 1-year pilot project that seeks to contribute to a reduction of the incidence and prevalence of avoidable diseases such as diarrhea in children 0-5 years in Kwa-Zulu Natal Province.
The purpose of this role is to lead the implementation of agreed project activities at the project sides (15 ECCDs) within eThekwini District/Metro in KZN province. The Project Officer will be responsible for liaising both internally with other units and externally with key stakeholders such as Provincial/District DoH, DSD, DBE, Local municipality, and other organisations to ensure proper coordination and implementation of the project. The Project Officer will work closely with and supervised by Health & Nutrition Thematic Manager.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Organise trainings and Mentoring sessions for ECCD practitioners in child nutrition (SETA accredited).
- Organise trainings of Community Healthcare Workers on the Save Children Integrated Community Case Management Methodology and build their capacity to conduct door-to-door health screening and services, including referrals to local health clinics, for children 0-5 who do not access ECCD centres.
- Organise Four (4) Child Health Awareness Days (CHADs) for community engagement and information sharing by duty bearers.
- Facilitate provision of IEC materials to parents during and after the CHAD events.
- Facilitate and organise an annual knowledge sharing and joint planning event with district task teams (government) to share information, provide opportunity to present results and showcase the partnership between SCSA and Sanofi.
- Facilitate and monitor the procurement and installation of water tanks to selected ECCD centres.
- Identify local Multiple CSO Partner organisations to assesses and build their capacity to deliver child health activities at scale.
- Organise Radio talk shows with Local community Radio stations to engage parents and stakeholders on prevention of preventable diseases including diarrhoea for children 0-5 years.

QUALIFICATIONS
- A minimum of a Degree in Community Development or other equivalent relevant qualifications
- Postgraduate qualification in social sciences or health development will be an advantage
EXPERIENCE AND SKILLS
- Experience in the South African children’s sector.
- Demonstrate skills and experience in project implementation, preferable having worked in the NGO sector.
- Good understanding of South African policies and legislation related to children.
- Good understanding of rights-based programming.
- Good planning and coordination skills.
- Conversant with current thematic issues and debates in the Southern Africa region.
- Community mobilisation skills.
