So, they asked SPDC for a detailed account of its social responsibilities, which include investing in local schools, hospitals, and infrastructure and building up host communities.

During this time, there have been over 12 incidents covered in the analysis of which 5 were significant enough to be impacting the community negatively. Among them was an incident in West Dieklaagte, South Africa where 3 people died in an oil spill and affected wildlife. Other incidents included one in Nigeria where a major pipeline was leaking crude oil and contaminating water sources. In August 2018, SPDC announced their plan to retire 8%million barrels of oil from SPDC’s assets globally by 2023 which would result in reduced demand for oil and cause a shift in investment patterns for SPDC’s assets and operations.$$$The SayPro analysis can be used as evidence to show that social responsibilities are necessary for companies like Shell to succeed worldwide.
