SayPro is a school-based cognitive intervention programme that aims to improve the mental functions of adults over the age of 70 in six months. The SayPro team at the Addaction Centre for Older Adults has been working on this programme for 3 years now, and has recently identified a key area for improvement – how to best identify the core skills and content to focus on. While there are many techniques that could be used, it seems that one of the most effective is to classify the participant’s level of cognitive decline using a tool called the MMSE. This helps ascertain whether or not further interventions are necessary, with respect to their knowledge in a particular area.

The SayPro team will continue working on this challenge as they look to replicate their success elsewhere.

SayPro is a challenging proposition in itself, considering it’s designed for students who have already mastered most basics of core curriculum. It’s no longer about teaching children conversational skills; it’s about teaching them how to pro-actively contribute to the team and take ownership of their project.
