Job Description

RESPONSIBILITIES: The incumbent will be responsible for: Supporting the research conducted by the Macadamia Protection Programme; Visiting Macadamia growers in all growing regions to assist with pest and disease related problems; Collecting insect pests and pathogens for identification via the disease diagnostic clinic; Collecting stink bug eggs to supplement the stink bug colony at the experimental farm; Collecting Lepidoptera larvae for on-going research projects; Packaging/storing samples according to procedures e.g. label accurately; Following and ensuring safety procedures and safety checks are maintained; Assisting in the disease diagnostic clinic; Identifying fungal pathogens by means of morphology and DNA sequence analysis; Identifying insect pests by means of DNA sequence analysis; Capturing of macadamia pest and disease information; Obtaining quotations e.g. consumables and accommodation and submit to line manager for approval; Placing of orders when stock levels are low; Arranging accommodation and book vehicles for field trips; Liaising with macadamia growers to arrange visits and provide feedback on pest and/or disease problems. MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS: A Relevant BSc Degree in Science; One-year working with insect pests and plant diseases; Driver’s licence. REQUIRED COMPETENCIES (SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE AND BEHAVIOURAL ATTRIBUTES): A thorough knowledge of and in the following: Entomology, Microbiology or Plant Pathology; Knowledge of Health and Safety protocols; MS Office Suite (Word, Excel etc.); High level of communication skills, written and verbal; Organising/prioritising skills; Attention to detail; Ability to maintain confidentiality; Basic biological laboratory safety practice; Data analysis skills; Responsible and reliable; Cope under stressful situations; Self-efficient and problem solver; Ability to interact with a wide range of entities within the university and external entities. ADDED ADVANTAGES AND PREFERENCES: A relevant Honours Degree in BSc; One-year in the following: Research; Organizing field trips; Use of biological molecular techniques including PCR, gel electrophoresis, and DNA sequencing analysis for pest and disease identification.
