The Research Assistant is responsible for the developing and implementing of a statewide needs assessment for an Early Refugee School Impact (RSI) program. Early RSI is a new component of the Office of Refugee Resettlement (ORR) RSI program, expanding RSI’s focus to encompass early childhood programming for ORR-eligible children ages 0-6 and their families. Early RSI aims to raise the quality of services available to refugee children and families across Kansas on the birth to kindergarten continuum, specifically to promote access to child care, ensure children are prepared to succeed in formal schooling, and holistically support the family at this crucial stage of children’s development. This is a five-month temporary assignment, possible extension based on programmatic needs. ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS: Desk review of key relevant documents, including but not limited to refugee community backgrounders and other local and state early childhood programs and resources Develop and plan for an Early RSI statewide needs assessment, including but not limited to participant compensation, selection of audience, stakeholder recruitment and engagement, data collection and methodology development, and formative and summative evaluations. Develop survey and interview design, selecting methodology for quantitative and qualitative data collection needs Conduct surveys, interviews, and focus groups at locations across the state. Provide instruction and guidance on best practices in data analysis and reporting, including but not limited to qualitative and quantitative data analysis, report creation and dissemination strategy, and action planning Submit final report of the Early RSI statewide needs assessment to KSOR Senior Management Team (SMT) Support the needs of participants by providing interpretation and translation, as appropriate Other duties, as assigned. REQUIREMENTS: Advanced degree (MA or higher) in education, social sciences, or any other subject relevant to Knowledge and experience of the educational needs and issues for refugee children ages 0-6 and their families in Kansas Excellent written and spoken English Expert knowledge and experience of qualitative and quantitative research Experience in report writing required Ability to work with a group of diverse stakeholders and produce results Fluency in the languages of the target populations (Swahili, Dari, Pashto, Spanish) preferred Ability to drive a vehicle; and must have valid driver license, proof of insurance and good driving record. Working Environment: Standard office work environment with considerable time at a computer terminal. Position is based in Wichita, Kansas. Remote work may be required. Five-month temporary assignment; with flexible working arrangement, if needed Occasional evening and weekend hours as required by the work. Approximately 20% domestic travel within Kansas.
