Description

In the construction industry, the standards that have to be met in terms of quality are specifications. These specifications state clearly what the requirements are for each different type of work or activity. They are normally separated into Standard Specifications (covering all similar works), and Project Specifications (related to that specific project only). The detailed training for the documentation is covered in the Unit Standard “Understand Contract Documentation” in this Learner ship.In this Unit Standard where we referred to “Conformance to Requirements”, the requirements are all covered in the specifications. It is not necessary to exceed the minimum requirements set out in the specifications, but it must be understood that a certain amount of leeway should be allowed for variations in materials and workmanship, so that all the work can meet the minimum requirements. For example, if the bedding material for a pipeline in a trench had to be compacted 93% Mod. AASHTO density, then it would be foolish to compact the bedding to 95%. This would take considerably more time and cost of compacting equipment, and could even possibly cause the material over-compacted and cause cracking. It is important to just meet the minimum requirements because that is all that will be paid for, with some extra to ensure that it all meets the minimum requirements.
