Current Construction Industry Trends The construction industry, like many others, is globalised. The larger contractors and consultants work outside SA: in sub-Saharan Africa and the Middle East, and compete against European, US and Chinese contractors and consultants. This means that the industry has to be efficient and productive to be globally competitive. Some of the means of increasing productivity are:

  • Mechanisation – Machines are more productive than men (and women).

  • Trained work force – Trained, skilled workers, who know what they are supposed to do and how to do it, are more productive than untrained workers.

  • Integration of the construction processes – This means that the industry as a whole has to be efficient and productive to be competitive. The contractor is increasingly supervising designs so that more easily constructable and cheaper structures are obtained.

  • Health and safety – It is increasingly recognised that accidents cause losses to the company (as well as to the employee, of course), so employers are increasingly training their workforce to work safely.

  • Outsourcing – Today the construction industry can access materials, equipment and a workforce from any part of the world. For example US design companies, using and taking advantage of world time differences, engage Indian consultancies to carry out design and CAD drawing work during the Indian day time and while the US employers are asleep.

All of this means that the SA construction workforce needs to be trained to be able to compete in the global workplace.
