Job Description

Role Clarification & Key Performance Areas The University of the Western Cape (UWC) enjoys national and international acclaim for its continuing contribution to democratic change in South Africa and for making quality education accessible to all South Africans and developing centres of excellence of national importance. The successful candidate will join a dynamic and supportive Faculty dedicated to teaching and research, as well as to overall student development. The ideal candidate must be highly motivated and willing to make a significant contribution to the development of the Faculty in the Department of Mercantile and Labour Law, specifically in the fields of law of insolvency, corporate law and/or credit law. The successful candidate appointed at the level of Senior Lecturer be responsible for the following key performance areas: Facilitate learning and teaching at undergraduate and postgraduate levels Conduct research and publish in the field of mercantile law, with specialisation in the fields law of insolvency, corporate law and/or credit law. Supervise undergraduate and postgraduate students in the field of mercantile law Academic administration Curriculum development and assessment Community engagement If appointed at the level of Associate Professor, the successful candidate will in addition to the above, be responsible for: Providing academic leadership Minimum Requirements Minimum Requirements for the position of Senior Lecturer: LLD or equivalent, in the field of mercantile law. Specialisation in the areas of law of insolvency, corporate law, and/or credit law will be an advantage. teaching experience, in the field of mercantile law. Specialisation in the areas of law of insolvency, corporate law, and/or credit law will be an advantage a record of quality peer reviewed publications, in the field of mercantile law. Specialisation in the areas of law of insolvency, corporate law, and/or credit law will be an advantage. a record of successful supervision at LLB final year level, whilst supervision at Master’s and Doctoral level would be advantageous. Minimum Requirements for the position of Associate Professor: LLD or equivalent in the field of mercantile law. Specialisation in the areas of law of insolvency, corporate law, and/or credit law will be an advantage. teaching experience in the field of mercantile law. Specialisation in the areas of law of insolvency, corporate law, and/or credit law will be an advantage. a significant record of quality peer reviewed publications in the field of mercantile law. Specialisation in the areas of law of insolvency, corporate law, and/or credit law will be an advantage. a record of successful postgraduate supervision, at least a Master’s level, whilst a record of supervision at Doctoral level would be advantageous, and evidence of expertise, national standing, and an international presence in the field of mercantile law. Specialisation in the areas of law of insolvency, corporate law, and/or credit law will be an advantage. key competencies include: Excellent verbal and written communication skills in English Presentation and facilitation skills Adaptability and the ability to operate in a diverse environment Student focused approach Planning and organising skills Computer literacy and e-learning skills Technical professional knowledge and skills in the discipline and in the core strategic areas, namely learning and teaching, research and scholarship, community engagement as well as professional leadership
