Job Description

Qualifications: · Registration as a Specialist Physician · Research experience is a pre-requisite and possession of a PhD or strong track record of publications of original research. · At least 10 years’ experience in obstetrics and gynaecology and in university administration at a senior level are essential requirements. · The applicant must have excellent leadership, interpersonal and managerial skills and should have attained sufficient academic and professional standing to command the respect of the members of the department. · The preferred candidate must be appointable at the level of Associate / Adjunct Professor or Full Professor in the University of the Witwatersrand. · The successful candida e will be appointed as a Head of Department for a fixed term of 5 years, renewable for an additional five years based on performance Duties: · provide the academic vision and leadership required to enable the department to establish and maintain a position of excellence within the Department and in the wider educational context. · Ensure the transparency of decision-making processes except where confidentiality is essential to protect an individual or the interests of the department. · The head also has a duty to consult staff members throughout the department, formally or informally, in order to ensure that policies and important decisions are properly canvassed and debated. · maintenance of academic excellence in teaching and research · development and implementation of teaching and learning programmes within the department’s discipline/s and the promotion of inter-disciplinary co- operation and innovation · maintaining teaching and examining standards within the department · setting research priorities, developing research partnerships, and building research capacity within the relevant fields · ensuring that the department meets its teaching commitments, both undergraduate and postgraduate · establishing, maintaining, and extending the department ‘s contact with other academic and research institutions and with the related professions · promoting social responsibility and awareness, and engagement with external stakeholders · ensuring the optimal utilization of resources (human, financial and infrastructural) to meet the school’s short- and long-term academic goals · Promote staff development and manage staff performance and assessment within the department. · Provide support to the Academic Divisions that are part of the academic Department of obstetrics and gynaecology · Work with Academic Divisional heads to ensure sound financial and personnel management · Encourage collaboration between departments working across the teaching platforms · Set norms and standards for the maintenance of service delivery and quality outputs in the department. · Further the mission and vision of the Faculty, School of Clinical Medicine and the Department of obstetrics and gynaecology.
