“I taught teens at the Bana Ba Modimo Children’s Ministry in Diepsloot for years. In spending time in this environment I came to know many of the teens personally. I started to understand their needs, hardships and zest for life. I realised that there was a great need for life skills and so started encouraging friends and colleagues to get involved. After much prayer I decided to take action. One birthday instead of receiving the usual bath smellies, scarves and bottles of wine from friends I sent a request out to rather make a donation to a fund. The result was encouraging and so Diepsloot Youth Project was born. Some special people at ENS, Africa’s largest law firm, encouraged the cause to grow and so Diepsloot Youth Project pursued registration. I have learned that when something is right, doors open. This has been my experience with this initiative as people continue to support and encourage Diepsloot Youth Project work.

After Jakes was finally arrested in 2017, Anna was referred to Diepsloot Youth Project for support. During her initial consultation with Diepsloot Youth Project’s senior staff attorney, Rethabile, Anna was extremely emotional and unable to speak about what happened. Before any legal support could take place, Anna was referred to an Diepsloot Youth Project therapist, Noluthando, who was able to help Anna work through the trauma she had endured, learn the skills necessary to manage her emotions, and address her fears of testifying at court. Over the next seven months, Rethabile provided Anna with ongoing support in her criminal case, including regular engagement with the investigating officer and the prosecutor. Over time, Anna grew increasingly confident and indicated that she was ready to face the man who raped her in court without feeling intimidated. Over the course of two days, Anna bravely told her story to the Magistrate. In January 2018, more than 3 years later, Jakes was convicted of rape, kidnapping, and assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm.

Currently the funding for the project comes from private donations and corporate sponsorship. Diepsloot Youth Project have begun experimenting with additional income-generating opportunities, including a low-cost learner fee similar to how Diepsloot Youth Project operate Diepsloot Youth Project adult education programs. It’s important to note that this fee is not for access to the Khan Academy (which is free), but to cover the operational costs of the local facilitator, lesson notes and the centre. There will of course be a number of learners who cannot afford even a low-cost option and Diepsloot Youth Project invite learner sponsorships to either supplement or fully cover the costs.
