Below are set out procedures which maximize effectiveness of inspection in quality control1. Control Raw Materials And Purchased Goods. The quality of purchased items is established through definite, written standards and specifications. Raw material inspection is aimed at two objectives:· Eliminate materials that do not meet the specification.· Evaluation of the supplier’s general quality performance and ability to furnish acceptable materials.2. Implement In-Process Inspection Strategically.Effective inspection prevents:· Defects from being concealed in the structure.· A defect from affecting subsequent operations.· Additional work from being performed on rejected work.3. Check End-Product Quality. The primary purpose of inspection of finished work is to make certain that the client consistently receives work of an acceptable quality. For most operations this involves one or more inspections.4. Plan The Inspection Operation. The task of each inspector must be clearly established in advance. He must know exactly what defects to look for as well as the acceptable quality level for each defect. Inspections should not rely on human senses; it should rather be done with measuring instruments. These should be the same instruments as those used in the subsequent testing.5. Inspect For Defect Promptly.Prompt inspection of work has several advantages. It prevents a process, which has gone out of control, from continuing to produce defective work. It aids in determining the cause for defects.6. Relate The Degree Of Inspection To The Degree Of Quality.Inspection is one of the indirect costs of construction. It is non-productive in the sense that it adds nothing directly to the value of the contract. Wherever an inspection operation can be eliminated, the cost of manufacturing is reduced as if an improvement in the construction method were consummated. Visual inspection for finish, appearance, surface defects and measurements are non-destructive and a 100% inspection is inevitable.7. Control Inspection Output And Accuracy.Inspection competence is dependant upon careful selection and training. The inspector must be carefully instructed in the techniques of the operation.8. Set Up A Procedure For Handling Borderline Material.Where the product quality is just outside the specification it often results in a debate. Many inspectors will only pass materials strictly within tolerances. Sometimes it is necessary to obtain the client’s consent to a deviation from the standard before rejecting “off-colour” material.9. Make Use Of Inspection Records.Standard record keeping cards or tickets should reflect the date, time, quantity and the batch number inspected as well as reasons if it was rejected. These cards are usually made out in multiples and copies supplied to the site agent. Assignable causes of defects can be traced, fixed and their recurrence prevented. This sort of investigation employing statistical techniques can be labelled quality research.
