Description

SELECTING A TRAINING METHOD (117870 SO 1, AC 5)The trainer must select the most appropriate training or facilitation method that relates to the audience and the defined learning outcomes. Training methods serve two purposes:

  • They provide a means for the learner to learn the specific training content you have compiled for the training.
  • They keep the learner interested and involved in the training so learning is enhanced.

TYPES OF TRAINING METHODSThe following are the different training methods;

  • Case Study: Learners are given information about a solution and directed to come to decisions or solve a problem concerning the situation. Can be brief or lengthy.
  • Demonstration: Learners are shown the correct steps for completing a task, or are shown an example of a correctly completed task.
  • Group Discussion: The trainer leads the group of learners in discussing a particular topic.
  • Reading: Written material is used to present new information to learners.
  • Structured Exercise: Learners take part in an exercise that enables them to practice newly acquired skills.
  • Trainer Presentation: Trainer orally presents new information to users.
  • Other: You can have a combination of the above (a “lab” which combines Reading and Structured Exercise) or a hybrid (Trainer Presentation which solicits feedback or reaction from participants).

GENERAL SELECTION CRITERIASelecting the appropriate method for a given scenario requires analyzing the circumstances and determining the “best fit” for the training.  Analyze your training by finding the best answer for the following set of questions.

  1. The Learning Objective: Will the method most effectively lead the learner toward the accomplishment of the learning objective?. Answer this question by answering the others.
  2. Learning Outcome: Is the outcome of the objective verbal (memorizing information), behavioral (involving motor skills), cognitive (requiring problem solving), intellectual (relying on concepts/models) or affective (change in attitude)?
  • The Learners: Does the method take into account the group size, experience levels, learning styles and other special characteristics of the group?

  1. The Practical Requirements: Is the method feasible given the physical environment, time (both preparation and presentation), materials and any cost limitations?
Advantages or Drawbacks

Method

Advantages

Drawbacks

 Case Study

Requires active learner involvement
Can simulate performance required after training
Learning can be observed

Information must be precise and kept up-to-date
Need sufficient time to complete
Learners can become too interested in case content

 Demonstration

Aids understanding and retention
Stimulates learners interest
Can give learners a model to follow

Must be accurate and relevant to learners
Examples require lengthy prep time
May be difficult for all to see

 Group Discussion

Keeps learners interested and involved
Resources can be discovered/shared
Learning can be observed

Learning can be confusing or lost
Some learners may dominate
Time control is more difficult

 Reading

Time saved: faster to read than talk
Material can be saved for later
Insures consistency of information

Can be boring if too long
Learners read at different paces
Difficult to gauge learning

 Structured Exercise

Aids retention
Allows practice of new skills in a controlled environment
Learners are actively engaged

Requires prep time
Difficult to tailor to all learners
Needs sufficient class time for completion and feedback

 Trainer Presentation

Group stays together on same point
Time control is easier
Useful for large groups (20+)

Dull without participation
Difficult to gauge learning
Retention is limited

REMEMBER: In order to select a method for training, you first must identify training objectives, outline the content of the training, then determine which methods would be suitable when measured against the selection criteria. The template below can be used.

1. List training objective

2. Identify actions learners must take to accomplish

3. Review criteria questions:

A. Type of outcome(s)?

B. Learner characteristics?

Some novice searchers, some experienced searchers; a combination of inductive (step-by-step) and deductive (concepts)

C. Practical requirements?

4. Proposed training method(s)
