Job Overview/Summary
The IRC in New Jersey seeks a Cultural Orientation and English Language Training (CO and ELT) Facilitator to support its education programs for refugees and other immigrants. Under the supervision of the Adult Education Coordinator, instructor will provide humanitarian entrants with contextualized instruction that promotes English language skills needed to obtain and retain employment and achieve self-sufficiency. Facilitator is expected to work independently and effectively engage students to ensure high retention rates. They must also ensure client data is collected and managed to effectively report on grant-funded programs.
Cultural Orientation is an orientation course for all newly arrived refugees which focuses on essential information for new Americans through content-based instruction. The class aims to familiarize clients with their new environment and prepare them for the daily challenges and opportunities of living as part of the New Jersey community. Instruction is highly structured, with an emphasis on strong English language support and performance-based outcomes.
This is a short-term assignment through September 2022, with the possibility for extension, dependent on funding.
Major Responsibilities (ESOL):
- Provide content-based English language instruction for 2 classes meeting 2 times per week.
- Develop and implement engaging lesson plans that assist students in meeting their goals and offer a variety of instructional methods adapted to diverse learning styles.
- Incorporate job readiness and technology into ESL classroom instruction.
- Design and administer student assessment tools that gauge student learning and monitor achievement of performance outcomes.
- Create a welcoming environment that fosters community and learning among program participants.
- Submit weekly lesson plans and/or bi-weekly unit plans that address material to be covered in class.
- Assist with registration, intake and pre- and post-testing as needed
- Monitor and track student participation in program.
- Assist with reporting requirements as needed
- Other related duties as assigned
Major Responsibilities (Cultural Orientation):
- Conduct outreach to clients and interpreters to coordinate scheduling orientation dates, times, and logistics.
- Complete training in CORE Adult learning principles and CO curriculum.
- Teach workshop at least twice per week on select days using IRC’s curriculum and materials on zoom and in person.
- Assess students at the end of the workshop.
- Attend home visits to deliver orientation at clients’ homes, and or pick clients to and from their homes when needed.
- Attend regular meetings with the program coordinator.
Job Requirements:
- University degree, plus at least 1 year of Experience teaching adult English language learners (ELLs).

Experience living in a country outside of the U.S. highly desired.

Knowledge of student-centered teaching strategies.

Comfort working with refugees and immigrants from a variety of backgrounds, including those with limited formal education and/or literacy skills.

Strong culturally responsive interpersonal communication skills.

Experience working with interpreters.

Experience using Zoom or online learning platforms.

Detail oriented and organized.

Ability to work both independently and as part of a team.
Language Skills* English fluency required, fluency in another language strongly preferred
Working Environment*:*
· Standard office work environment.
· Some remote work optional for virtual workshops
