CRS’ relief and development work is accomplished through programs of emergency response, HIV, health, agriculture, education, microfinance and peacebuilding.

Background

As a global organization, that has grown significantly in size over the past decade, CRS is now comprised of almost 8,000 people from over 100 countries who collaborate to catalyze transformational change. Four Strategic Approaches that will enable the agency to achieve the Vision 2030 Strategy have been identified. One key Strategic Approach is to build a more agile, innovative, and impactful organization. The Human Resources (HR) Operations unit within the Global People Resources (GPR) team is integral to shaping this more agile, innovative and impactful agency.

Job Summary:

The Occupational Health Specialist works to ensure that CRS upholds its commitment to a safe workplace that supports staff health and wellbeing. You will manage the vendors for related benefit programs, provide global safe workplace guidance, mitigate occupational health risks associated with CRS-sponsored travel, and serves as the Global People Resources (GPR) advisor in addressing existing, anticipated, and emerging occupational health-related questions and issues from our global locations, in close coordination with the Global Staff Safety and Security Unit (GSSU).

Role and Key Responsibilities:

Global Standards for a Safe Workplace

  • Inform development of associated policies and procedures for the establishment of CRS Global Standards for a Safe Workplace.
  • Develop easy-to-use tools and guidance that can be used/adapted in all locations.
  • Develop associated training/learning materials.

Benefit Vendor Management

  • Manage vendors who administer benefits related to staff care and upholding CRS’ duty of care (i.e., medical clearance, emergency medical services, psychosocial support, Employee Assistance Program, pre- and post-deployment support).
  • Coordinate with broker to manage request for proposal (RFP) processes in line with procurement policy or as needed, to address identified gaps.
  • Develop and continually strengthen vendors’ standard operating procedures to ensure CRS is getting full value from the vendor and that implementation is aligned with CRS policies and procedures.
  • Ensure effective communication of these benefits to colleagues.

Mitigation of Occupational Health Risks

  • Serve as an authorizing person for emergency medical services. Ensure smooth handover to and coordination with GSSU in the case of critical incidents, including air ambulances.
  • Ensure expatriates and their dependents have access to updated information about health risks in their assignment location, including vaccine requirements/recommendations.
  • Provide consultative support to GSSU to ensure health risk information is available for CRS business travelers, facilitate coordination with the GPR community as needed.
  • Ensure tracking of expatriate and dependent medical clearances and provide guidance to leadership when “fit-with-restrictions” or “unfit” assessments are received, including guidance on possible accommodation.
  • Provide guidance on updating/creating related policies and procedures, coordinating with the Office of General Counsel as appropriate.

Global Standards for Basic Health Benefits

  • Guide GPR in the development and maintenance of global standards for minimum health benefits across all CRS locations, including mental health and medevac.

GPR’s Health Liaison to CRS’s Global Staff Safety and Security Unit

  • Provide consultative support as requested by the GSSU in areas such as medical escalation plans and developing/monitoring quality of care in locations.
  • Facilitate GSSU coordination with the GPR community as needed.

Qualifications

Basic Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in a related field, or equivalent experience.

  • Minimum of 4 years related experience in a large organization, with significant experience in the operations of a robust Duty of Care/Staff Wellbeing team.

Required Languages –English. French, Spanish, or Arabic a plus.

Travel Must be willing an able to travel up to 10% internationally

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Experience successfully managing a budget and a suite of vendors providing inter-related staff care services

  • Deep knowledge of duty-of-care concepts and their organizational implications

  • Effective and flexible communication skills

  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with multiple stakeholders, incorporating and balancing complex and sometimes conflicting input

  • Project management skills with the ability to design and manage a project through to completion

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in Occupational Health
  • Medical background
  • Experience navigating laws in a variety of countries
  • Master’s degree preferred
