PURPOSE AND RATIONALE OF THE QUALIFICATION
Purpose:
The qualification will enable the learner to learn and be aware of the need for independence, self-discipline, time-management and abstract thinking in the field of Information Technology and related disciplines. They will also be aware of the social responsibility in dealing with computers and computerized information through, for example, discussions of and examples related to the confidentiality and security of personal or company data, the effects of electronic vandalism and electronic fraud.
The qualification also deals with ethical and cultural issues in the relationship between cultures and the use of Information Technology; the need to act professionally, ethically and with personal integrity; and to take responsibility for the application of the knowledge and skills acquired.
Successful learners will be prepared for and become aware of the many career opportunities available in the various fields which make up the discipline of Information Technology. They will also develop entrepreneurial skills through the use of principles and concepts of Information Technology, integrated with knowledge from other related disciplines.
The purpose of the qualification is to:
Provide learners with graduate level knowledge, specific skills and applied competence in IT that are required to provide opportunities for personal intellectual growth, gainful economic activity and for making rewarding contributions to society.
Significantly increase the number of graduates in IT to ensure that a greater number of South Africans are capable of participating responsibly in the information age currently upon us.
Rationale:
South African legislative and policy requirements and expectation are that the higher education sector be actively engaged and involved in bridging the skills gap inherent throughout our country. This qualification is geared towards closing the skills gap in the Information Technology sector, specifically in regard to graduates who are able to apply computer theory in the business environment.
LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING
It is assumed that a learner entering this qualification is competent in the language of teaching and learning of the institution offering the qualification at NQF Level 4 and in Computer Studies at NQF Level 4.
Recognition of Prior Learning:
Learners` prior learning is recognized through a formal process of submission of portfolio of evidence and evaluation by our staff to recognize any formal or informal learning that the learner might have achieved previously that can be used towards obtaining the qualification in part.
Access to the Qualification:
Access is open to learners in possession of a National Senior Certificate or equivalent qualification at NQF Level 4 granting access to bachelor degree study.
