Description
Baan Dek Foundation (BDF) is a non-profit, non-political, and non-religious organization based in Bangkok and Chiang Mai. BDF provides access to education, health and social services to more than 1,400 vulnerable children living in urban slums and construction site camps in Thailand. Through its direct service provision programs and systemic impact strategy, BDF protects and empowers marginalized children and their families to become more self-sustainable and provide opportunities for a better future.
The Systemic Impact Volunteer will contribute to the implementation of BDF’s Systemic Impact Strategy. The long term objective of this strategy aims to create sustainable change in the construction sector to ensure the well-being of workers and their children in collaboration with the construction sector and other key stakeholders. In order to address issues commonly faced by construction workers and their children, BDF and UNICEF Thailand developed the Building Social Impact Framework for Action after a field research study, Building Futures in Thailand in 2018.
The Framework for Action proposes 12 key recommendations to companies, for them to support migrant communities with improved living conditions and facilitating access to key public services. BDF encourages the construction sector to adopt these recommendations and to facilitate this process, has developed — through a collaborative process with companies and community members– and piloted a Toolkit which allows company staff to implement the Framework for Action.
In 2022, the Systemic Impact Strategy began its Adoption Phase by launching the Building Social Impact Initiative, a multi-stakeholder effort, coordinated by BDF and driven by the private sector to improve the living conditions and access to services of workers and their children living in construction camps across Thailand. The Initiative is open to all key stakeholders in the construction and real estate sector, with construction companies making up the core membership as the implementers of the Framework. By joining, companies receive free access to training on integrating the Framework for Action and Toolkit into their social sustainability strategy and day-to-day business operations. Companies who join can expect to bring their operations in line with the UN Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights, the Child Rights and Business Principles, SDGs and keep ahead of the rapidly evolving sustainability reporting landscape.
