Diversity is a common issue in the workplace. Being able to manage diversity will set you on the right path to achieving your career goals. One of the causes of diversity is culture.Culture can be defined as anything that is learnt in the interaction process in human society. This is a very broad definition and includes such learnt aspects of human social life as
- language,
- customs,
- norms,
- Values and also symbols.
There is a need for cultural sensitivity. Cultural sensitivity is being aware that both cultural differences as well as cultural similarities exist between people and that these differences and similarities can affect attitudes, behaviors and communication styles. Cultural sensitivity is often used as a synonym for cultural awareness, which refers to the ability to place yourself in the shoes of another. Being culturally sensitive means being able to understand why another person thinks or experiences things differently than you.How can you develop cultural awareness? One can never learn everything about another culture; however, there are practical, everyday steps we can take to develop our cultural awareness. Here are some suggestions:
- Develop awareness: take a look at your own biases and prejudices, become aware of cultural norms, attitudes, and beliefs, and value diversity;
- Don’t allow cultural differences (preferences) to become the basis for criticism and judgments. Differences are neither good nor bad – it is what we do with them that makes a difference;
- Build friendships of mutual respect and a desire for understanding;
- Be yourself and show that you care about the person and that you honestly want to help;
- Take time to listen. If you don’t understand, or you are not being understood, take the time to find out why. Explain or ask questions. For example, “Would you help me understand?”
- Acquire knowledge about other cultures by attending classes or seminars, reading books or watching movies about other cultures, and attending cultural events/festivals.
Importance of cultural sensitivityCultural sensitivity can play an important role on the personal level. A failure to do so can lead to everything from personal offense taken to certain cultural insensitive moves (such as not taking into account a person’s cultural dietary restrictions during a business lunch) to the failure to do business entirely if a company consistently offends the culture of a potential business partner.
