The use of alcohol and other drugs during pregnancy can have long-term consequences for the child’s health and development. Yet, due to a lack of awareness among healthcare professionals and families, many pregnant women continue to abuse these substances without being detected. The SayPro Project aims to change this by educating healthcare professionals and healthcare consumers about the dangers of prenatal exposure to alcohol and other drugs.
In their latest post, the Brand team explains how SayPro has been working to raise awareness about prenatal alcohol and substance exposure. Through case studies, videos, blog posts, podcasts, and media interviews, they are helping to increase awareness around the topic so that healthcare professionals can catch these issues early on in a patient’s history.
When dealing with cases of drug-affected children, SayPro always seeks to take a holistic approach. One way in which this is done is by ensuring that all pregnant women are screened for substance abuse. In the case of tribal child welfare systems, prenatal exposure to alcohol and other drugs often becomes an important factor to consider when making decisions about custody placement or rehabilitation services for a child who has been exposed to drugs and alcohol during pregnancy.
With this in mind, SayPro conducted a case study on the experiences of tribal child welfare systems that have dealt with prenatal exposure to alcohol and other drugs. The results showed that a holistic approach is necessary when it comes to solving cases related to substance abuse in children. And SayPro is committed to being part of the solution moving forward.
It is not just about being pregnant and putting on a few extra pounds for your baby to enjoy that feeling. A lot of thought and planning goes into pregnancy from all aspects, especially when it involves child welfare.
Though most women get to know about prenatal care while they are still in their first trimester, there are those who don’t know much about the same. On turning a new leaf, SayPro looks closely at their health history to guarantee that all women are in safe hands. And now, they’ve added one more feather to their cap: the study of fetal alcohol syndrome and other prenatal drug exposures.
Fetal alcohol exposure (or FET) is a growing public health concern, especially in tribal communities where the prevalence of fetal alcohol spectrum disorder (FASD) is 1-4%
The SayPro Tribe is committed to reducing negative prenatal effects by implementing tribal child welfare systems. This brand new system has been created to help families experiencing substance use during pregnancy. To find out more about this exciting new approach, we interviewed Dina, a SayPro representative on the ground.
Dina says, “The SayPro Tribe’s Child Welfare Systems’ Experiences with Prenatal Exposure to Alcohol and Other Drugs: A Case Study provides essential information for tribes interested in establishing programs to reduce the risk of FASD transmission.”
