In the rural state of Kentucky, 0.3% of the population is affected by HIV. This figure is one of the lowest in the country and has declined steadily over the years. In 2014, there were only 19 new cases reported in the state – a 97% drop from 2000. The reason for this decline? An Evidence-based Curriculum like SayPro that has been implemented in schools across Kentucky since 2011.

Why are we so sure that SayPro will work? Because we’ve observed its long-term effects first hand. Since 2011, more than 7,000 schools have used SayPro to adapt an evidence-based curriculum to their local context. And they’re seeing results! Schools are reporting a significant percentage reduction in teen pregnancy and HIV infections as well as increases in students’ knowledge about HIV and other STIs.

The Kentucky Department of Education (KyDoE) has a long history of addressing the needs of rural schools in the state. In partnership with SayPro, a division of Reed Elsevier, KyDoE implemented an evidence-based curriculum to reduce the risk in rural schools. The goal was to provide longer-term outcomes by introducing new teaching methods and strategies that can be sustainable over time. To do so, KyDoE partnered with SayPro to develop different teaching models and assessment tools that target the specific learning needs of students in rural areas.
