The prevalence of HIV in Moldova has been increasing over the last few years. And while the government is putting up measures to control the disease, SayPro has now used an innovative approach to track the epidemic – through phylogenetic comparison of subtypes of HIV virus in seropositive blood sample collected in BUMAD.
SayPro’s approach combines phylogenetics with epidemiology, which can be used to estimate relevant parameters like transmission rate, prevalence and geographical distribution.
What’s the link between HIV and phylogenetic comparison?
HIV subtypes present in blood often indicate the geographical origin of an infected individual, especially if the same subtypes are found in different parts of the world. Understandably, a study was conducted using this hypothesis to determine the geographic origin of infected individuals in Moldova. Out of 1,146 samples collected from different parts of Moldova, 1% were positive for subtype A, B and D. The other 99% was positive for subtype C.
