Job Description

RESPONSIBILITIES: The incumbent will be responsible for: Instructor tasks: Providing instruction to students in Electrical Engineering, before and during practical sessions; Aiding the module lecturer and assistant lecturers during practical sessions; Develop circuits and laboratory setups for practicums as required by the module lecturer; Setup and test practicums so that these are ready before practicum sessions. This includes testing of designs and verification of results against requirements, and adaption as necessary; Evaluate students during practicum sessions, as required by module lecturer; Provide guidance to and support final year Project students. Operational Laboratory management: Operational laboratory management and maintenance including overseeing the life-cycle administration of assets (specification, acquisition, maintenance of instruments, record- keeping; Overseeing the administration, storage and lending of assets to personnel and students (laboratory. instruments, furniture) and recordkeeping of the latter; Administer components (specification, determining availability locally and abroad, quotations, orders, purchases, log into asset register, store or distribute as needed); Management/maintenance of equipment. Liaison and marketing: Interact with students and aiding as needed; Handle internal technical inquiries in connection with Electrical and Electronic Laboratories Aiding other departments as needed (via line manager); Market the University of Pretoria and the with local collaboration with stakeholders in the industry (via line manager); General logistical support in Dept; Aiding with general maintenance in the (instructions via line manager); Assist during Open Days, Engineering Week and other special departmental or University events; Attend to specific tasks, requests or instructions from line manager (Control Instructor) Function Head: Labs. and Head of ; Supervise during tests and exams. MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS: Relevant BTech (Electronics) degree (Technicon) or National Diploma for Technicians (Electronics) (Technicon); Technical industry ; A total of 3 years’ with a Technicon B Tech degree or a total of 5 years’ with a Technicon National Diploma for Technicians. REQUIRED COMPETENCIES (SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE AND BEHAVIOURAL ATTRIBUTES): Electronic Engineering: Analog and Digital; Control Systems; Automation; Microcontroller systems; PCB CAD and simulation software; Knowledge and in electronic test and measurement; Repair knowledge and of electric/electronic T&M equipment; Knowledge of the content and application of the AHS Act and Regulation (Act 85 of 1993), updated 2003; Knowledge of FPGA’s and VHDL; Knowledge and in programming DSP’s; Python Programming; C or C++ programming; MATLAB, Simulink, SolidWorks, SolidEdge, 3D printing; Troubleshoot and repair of electronic lab equipment; Desktop applications (including e-mail, spreadsheet and word processors) and engineering software. Behavioral competencies: Self-starter, dependable, competent, fluent communication, able to collaborate, team worker, good interpersonal skills, good organizational skills, adaptable, willing to learn, to keep on studying, resilience, conceptual thinking, good judgement and decision-making ability, assertiveness, driving execution; Good communication and writing skills, Proficient in languages of instruction.
