Job Description

Role Clarification & Key Performance Areas The Dullah Omar Institute (DOI), established in 1990, is a self-funded unit in the Faculty of Law (UWC) focussing on research and advocacy on human rights and democracy in South Africa and Africa. It pursues the transformation of society, according to a rights-based, anti-racism, and feminist paradigm, and binds itself to these values internally. The Institute receives grant funding from a diverse range of sources with different reporting requirements. The Institute has an annual budget in excess of R30 million, held in more than 50 cost entities, and manages this in close collaboration with the University. Much of its work is conducted in partnership with other civil society organisations. The Institute seeks to employ a Coordinator: Finance. The Coordinator: Finance will work under the supervision of, and report to, the Manager: DOI Finance in ensuring the integrity of the Institute’s budgetary, financial management, and financial reporting systems and underlying controls. This is a full-time position – an initial 2-year contract – with the potential of renewal. The successful candidate needs to be based within a reasonable traveling distance from Cape Town and may be required to work at the University campus in Bellville for all or some days in the week. Key Performance Areas Financial Management: process payments, and correctly record entries in compliance with DOI and UWC policies prepare journals for sign-off by the Finance Manager Financial Reporting: generate monthly, quarterly, and bi-annual financial reports for sign-off by the Finance Manager prepare draft financial reports on grants as per donor contracts and as needed provide support for audits of cost entities Liaison and Advice: prepare draft answers to financial queries of donors and the University’s Finance Department Budgeting and Planning: support the development of project budgets and the annual DOI budget General Administration: provide ad hoc assistance with finance administrative projects and tasks Minimum Requirements Qualifications and Skills Required: Bachelor of Commerce/Accounting degree or similar field at least three years’ , working in donor-funded financial management and/or institution of higher learning IT proficiency (in particular Excel), and familiarity with the University’s accounting software (Infor OS™) or demonstrated ability to learn new accounting software Competencies: ability to work collectively with internal and external stakeholders attention to detail and an uncompromising attitude to meeting deadlines without sacrificing quality verbal and written communication skills ability to maintain the highest level of honesty and professionalism when dealing with staff, funders, project participants and partner organisations
